Halogens like bromine, fluorine and iodine react to certain elements that may affect the properties of a material. Cables that don’t have halogen are more durable since they resist extreme elements in the marine environment.
Cables that are free of halogen also don’t release toxic compounds that are harmful to the health of passengers. Some wires with fluorine are unsuitable for use in some sections of a marine vessel’s wiring system.
Materials like XLPE withstand higher temperatures than insulation made by thermoplastic polyethene. These insulation materials are also resistant to deformation and a variety of chemicals.
The IEC 61034 standards measure the smoke emission of cables when burned under defined conditions. Marine cables pass this test when they emit dense, low smoke. This type of smoke is easy to extinguish and doesn’t lead to significant damage. It also doesn’t stain the interiors of the vessel and has a low health risk for passengers.
Marine cables are used in a variety of marine transport applications, like bulk carriers, reefers and tankers. Without the abovementioned properties, these vessels are a huge safety risk on the sea.
